Bishop Gorman vs. Mater Dei game preview

The Monarchs and Gaels will play each other for the first time since 2018, when Alabama QB Bryce Young and Oregon RB Sean Dollars helped torch Gorman, 42-0. That followed a closer matchup from the previous season, when UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson and West Virginia’s JT Daniels combined for 652 passing yards in a QB duel that ended in a 35-21 Mater Dei victory.

Last year, Gorman finished 12-1 with a win in its 5A state championship game against McQueen, while the Monarchs went undefeated and capped things with a state title and a football championship bowl win over Serra, 44-7.

Gorman appears to be equipped to take on just about anybody this season, as the Gaels are led by USC wide receiver commit Zachariah Branch, a five-star prospect in 247Sports composite rankings. The 18-time state championship program also has two four-star recruits in its secondary, in Georgia commit Justyn Rhett and Oregon commit Kodi Decambra.

Mater Dei has been a factory for producing quarterbacks, and the Monarchs have another one in the pipeline in junior Elijah Brown. The 6-foot-2 signal caller is ranked as the No. 41 player in the nation in the 2024 class by 247Sports. Brown looked sharp in the opener, tossing five touchdowns.

He should have plenty of time to throw with a massive anchor like DeAndre Carter on the offensive line. Also a junior, the 6-foot-4, 340-pound Carter has over 20 offers, including ones from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oregon and Texas. Four-star linebacker Leviticus Su’a should help anchor the defense, and if the opener is a good indication, this unit should be tough to move the ball on. Keep track of all the action over at MaxPreps
