Why the Packers can cover

Green Bay won’t have Aaron Rodgers and a few key starters for the preseason finale, but that is not a surprise. The Packers are equipped to withstand those absences, especially at quarterback with Jordan Love. The former top prospect made two starts in the 2021 preseason, throwing for 271 yards on 35 attempts. Love has 289 yards in the 2022 preseason and made a single start in the regular season last year, throwing for more than 400 yards and two touchdowns with Rodgers sidelined.

Green Bay has an ongoing battle at wide receiver, with talented players projected to appear. Romeo Doubs has impressed in training camp, and the fourth-round pick has six catches for 69 yards and two touchdowns in preseason action. Rookie wideout Christian Watson is also slated to play, marking his potential preseason debut for a high-upside offense.

Why the Chiefs can cover

Kansas City knew early in the week that Green Bay would not be playing its prominent starters, headlined by Rodgers. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is more coy in revealing his plans, but Kansas City played its key players for two series in the 2021 preseason finale. That included Patrick Mahomes, who has shined in the 2022 preseason.

The former MVP finished in the top five of the NFL in passing yards and passing touchdowns last season, and Mahomes has keyed three drives during the preseason, all of which ended in passing touchdowns. He also tossed a pair of touchdown passes in the 2021 preseason finale, and Mahomes’ presence is a key advantage. In addition, the Chiefs are frisky on defense, allowing fewer than 17 points per game in the last 12 contests of last year. Kansas City may also benefit from ball security issues from Green Bay’s backup quarterbacks.
